When Injustice Reigns

This past Sunday, we listened to the prophet Habakkuk call out five woes against Babylon—an empire built on violence, exploitation, idolatry, and unchecked power. As Tim MacBride helped us see, these words are not just ancient poetry—they are a mirror held up to every generation where injustice thrives.

Habakkuk’s world was filled with corruption. The powerful trampled the weak. Greed went unpunished. Violence seemed to win. And for a time, it appeared that God was silent.

It can feel like that in our world too, can’t it?

We see abuse of power—in governments, in workplaces, even in churches. We hear the cries of the oppressed, and we wonder: How long, Lord? Will justice ever come?

Habakkuk 2 reminds us that God is not indifferent. He sees. He knows. And He has issued a clear verdict: those who build empires of injustice are building their own ruin. God will not let evil go unanswered. The proud may seem to prosper for a time, but “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (v.14).

This is both a warning and a promise.

It’s a warning to all of us—especially those with influence—to examine our hearts and reject the way of pride, greed, or control. And it’s a promise that no matter how bleak things may seem, God is still on the throne. He will bring justice. He is acting, even if we can’t yet see the full picture.

In a world where the wicked often seem to flourish, God invites us to live by faith—to wait patiently, to speak truth boldly, and to cling to the hope that justice will roll down like a river.

“But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.” (Habakkuk 2:20)
